(UPDATE: United Coffee is closed down for an indefinite period of time 😦 )

I’ve long considered it a blessing to work in the Kapitolyo area. Not only is the place swarming with food establishments (covering most major cuisines to boot), the walking distance between each establishment makes the area ripe for a food crawl. Although a number of coffee shops have been open for the last couple of years, it’s been a struggle for me to find good specialty coffee in the area.

That changed when a cafe called United Coffee opened nearby. Tucked inside an area that, from my memory, used to be a large carinderia, United Coffee is a welcome addition to Kapitolyo’s ever growing foodie scene, and an even larger welcome for me as a coffee fanatic who’s been looking for a good place to get a nice cup of coffee. Opened and operated by Leslie Carlos, Trisha Dijamco, and Juni Corleto, the look and feel of the place is a far cry from its hole-in-the-wall exterior.

Let’s talk coffee first. United serves beans primarily from YKW Roasters (aka the fine gents from EDSA Beverage Design Group), though guest beans do pop up from time to time. They are, admittedly, not the first to get their supply from EDSA, but what I can guarantee however is the quality of the brew. Leslie is quite the fan of using the Kalita Wave, and I can’t blame her. The citrusy flavors of the Ethiopia Sidamo Hunkute come out quite well in an overall clean cup.

The food selections on the menu include pastas, sandwiches, and of course, what’s a café without its pastries? Having a good mix of both food and coffee, United Coffee is a welcome respite from the growing crop of bars in the area, and should definitely be on your must-visits when looking for a good cup of coffee in Kapitolyo.
